Case study
The Old Vic Theatre stage, London

An interesting and demanding LEL project.
The Old Vic Theatre auditorium was to be
temporarily converted to a venue for a celebrity
wedding reception.

This entailed the installation of steel decking over the
entire theatre stage and seating areas to provide a level
and stable floor for the function.

The project faced a number of problems from the
outset, the need to work around the Royal Shakespeare
Company’s production sets installed at the theatre meant
an overnight installation and a quick disassemble.

We also devised a technique for spanning over the rows
of theatre seats as there was insufficient time available to
remove and replace the seating. Access was very limited
and great care had to be taken not to damage any part of
the elaborately decorated theatre.

The whole platform area was decorated with carpet
and draped. The installation required 75 of our 8’x4’ decks
and was successfully completed overnight within a seven
hour shift.
